THE SINGING CIRCLE is led by Roy Barber who has been working with singers of all ages for 48 years and holds a Masters in Expressive Therapies from  Lesley College in Cambridge, Mass  and also a Masters in Pastoral Counseling from Boston University.

Since he moved to Washington in 1977, he has directed 75 musicals in both the professional and educational venues at Studio, Roundhouse, New Playwrights, Kennedy Center Program for Families, and Horizons Theater. Roy ran a Cabaret Company DC CABARET that created a nationally produced musical play about the AIDS Crisis in Washington in 1987 DANCE AGAINST DARKNESS.  He was also was awarded for a musical play- AIN’T NO HOME about domestic violence in our city. Roy has taught  Theater for Social Change at George Washington University, and led workshops at Columbia University and Depaul University in Chicago about how to transform oral histories into musical theater projects that address social issues.

Since retiring in 2013 he has directed choral groups for the Parkinson’s Foundation of the National Capital Area, and worked with the Chevy Chase At Home program, working with Robert Sachelli in a song /dance workshop for seniors, some living with Parkinson’s.

The weekly Singing Circle at the Residences runs for one hour. The focus is on building community, expanding breath control, articulation, and projection in both speaking and singing.  The once a week meetings create a singing family and a forum for personal sharing and expression.  He works from songs we all know–show tunes, folk/pop songs and introduces new songs each week.  The group does vocal exercises to start expanding  skills, then works on listening to each other and blending. Join them!
