Contemporary African American Artists
Wednesday, August 12, 2020 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm
An event every week that begins at 12:30 pm on Wednesday, repeating until Wednesday, September 30, 2020
Explore Contemporary African American artists with Chichi Lovett. Chichi will use works of art created by African American artists to explore issues around race and feminism (among other things), that these pieces can instigate. Take the time to look at this art and think about what it represents to you and learn about the context of the art and artist in their own time. Art and artists will include: The Quilts of Gees Bend Alabama by the Quilters of Gees Bend, The Liberation of Aunt Jemima by Betye Saar, Sunflower Quilting Bee at Arles by Faith Ringgold, and The Block by Romare Bearden.
Garnetta ‘Chichi’ Lovett is a native Brooklynite, visual artist (BFA), retired professor (Auburn University) and community arts advocate and organizer. She currently lives in Washington DC.
