“Maryland Heroes of the Underground of the Underground Railroad” by Jenny Masur
Friday, October 15 @ 3:00 pm| Free
Unlike Tubman and Douglass, other Maryland freedom seekers are little known. Masur traces nine in her forthcoming book (Juneteenth 2022) from whom she will pick examples. They were all courageous and resourceful. They underwent perilous journeys escaping slavery, and ended up in places as varied as Britain, Canada, Schenectady, and Worcester. Some were recaptured, but rescued by fellow African Americans, redemption through purchase, or successful trials in court. They show how after escape they could rebuild their lives successfully. Three wrote slave narratives.
Jenny Masur is a native Washingtonian. She worked 25 years for the National Park Service, 17 years of which was for the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. She recently completed a book on the Underground Railroad in the Washington area.
