Let’s visit the National Portrait Gallery together on Thursday, August 25th. The bus will leave Iona Senior Services 4125 Albemarle Street NW at 11:00 am to arrive at the National Portrait Gallery at 11:30 am. We will be departing from the Portrait Gallery at 1:30 pm.

We will focus on the The Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition, which celebrates excellence in the art of portraiture. We will not have a guided tour, but the captions next to the portraits provide ample background for each artwork.

The forty-two portraits on view here were selected through an open call that garnered more than 2,700 entries from artists working across the United States and Puerto Rico. The artists responded with works that engage contemporary society, many providing new insights into the unprecedented reality we have experienced in the time surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic. The selected finalists create artworks in a wide range of media, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, textiles, video, and performance.

Meet in the exhibit space on the second floor at 11:30 am. We will independently tour for an hour or so,  then purchase or bring our lunches to eat in the atrium. The bus will pick us up at 1:30 pm. Spaces on the the bus are limited but the museum is right on the Gallery Place/Chinatown red line stop, it is easy to access.

Register below if you plan to take the bus. If you plan to meet the group there, please email Deshawn Larrimore at dlarrimore@iona.org so that she knows to look for you in the second floor space. Deshawn will reserve some tables in the atrium so the group can have lunch together.

Other current exhibition are posted on the website at npg.si.edu
