Walking Tour – Dupont Circle Historic District: Beyond Embassy Row

Meet:  May 26, 2026, 10am, Toastique, 1899 N St, NW (a block from the 19th St. exit from Dupont Circle Metro)

End, approximately 12:15: The Whittemore House Museum, Home of the Woman’s National Democratic Club, 1526 New Hampshire Ave NW

In the late 19th Century, the neighborhood around Dupont Circle was established by a “smart set” of wealthy, powerful and high society Americans.  In addition, many less prominent Washingtonians (then, as now) made their homes in the townhouses that were built near the streetcar line that traversed beneath the Circle.  The transformation of Gilded Age mansions along Massachusetts Avenue is well known, but beyond Embassy Row the history of DC city-folk continues, reflected in the unique homes, organizations and (yes, more) embassies that make up the streetscape of East Dupont. Our walk will end with a tour of the historic mansion museum, Whittemore House, courtesy of the Woman’s National Democratic Club.
