How We Came To Be

Project Background

Around Town DC was launched in January 2019 with a simple goal: to create a centralized resource that makes it easier for seniors in Northwest DC to access wellness, fitness, and recreational programs. Initially, we focused on providing an online directory for local events, helping older adults find programs that matched their interests and location.

However, in 2020, we realized that seniors needed more than just an event directory—they needed opportunities for community connection and engagement, especially as the challenges of the pandemic made isolation even more acute. In response, we quickly pivoted to offer virtual programs that allowed seniors to stay active, learn, and socialize from the safety of their homes.

Today, Around Town DC proudly offers a combination of in-person and virtual programs to serve the needs of seniors across the city. We host events at DC Public Libraries, DPR RecreationCcenters, Iona Tenleytown, and virtually through Zoom, ensuring that older adults have access to a wide variety of opportunities for wellness, fitness, and social engagement.

Our Impact

Since its inception, Around Town DC has grown to serve over 3,600 events and 3,100 registered users. Our programs have become a vital resource for seniors 60+, addressing the lack of wellness centers and community spaces for older adults in DC. Whether in person or virtually, our goal is to make wellness and social connection accessible to everyone, regardless of their location or circumstances.

If you’re 60+ years old living in DC, Around Town DC is here to help you find the programs that best fit your interests and needs. Join us today, and be part of a vibrant community where you can stay fit, meet new people, and have fun.
